10 Things I Thought I Needed to Start (That I Actually Didn’t)

2 min
📌 I used to think I needed a perfectly color-coded budget binder, a five-year plan, and about $2,000 worth of “startup tools” before I could even think about changing my financial life.
Spoiler alert: I didn’t.
I wasted way too much time “preparing to prepare” — and not enough just starting.
If you’re standing at the edge of your money mess wondering if you’re “ready”... this one’s for you.

Here are 10 things I thought I needed — and totally didn’t.

❌ A Perfect Budget

Nope. I started with a blurry screenshot of my bank app and vibes.
It wasn’t cute, but it worked.

❌ A Fancy Planner

I love pretty notebooks, but they didn’t save my money — my determination did.

❌ A Financial Certification

You don’t need to be a guru to get your crap together.
You just need to stop avoiding your bank balance.

I thought I needed to brand everything before I earned a dime.
Turns out, people don’t care what it’s called — they care what it does.

❌ Coffee

I don’t drink it. Dr Pepper is my fuel.
Don’t let startup culture make you feel like you need espresso and a ring light.

❌ A Pinterest-Perfect Routine

I work on this in 15-minute chunks between dogs barking and laundry piles.
Spoiler: That’s still progress.

❌ A “Supportive” Partner

Would it be nice? Sure.
Did I have one when I started this? Not even close.
You can do this for you — not for applause.

❌ A Following

No one thanked me when I hit publish.
I wasn’t trending. I just kept showing up.
Now people are watching — because it’s real.

❌ Passive Income Already Rolling In

This isn’t a success story… yet.
And that’s exactly why it matters.

❌ Permission

From who? You?
You have it. Right now.
Let’s go.

💬 Final Thought

If you’ve been waiting for some magical “ready” moment, I promise you — that moment’s a lie.
Start messy. Start unsure. Start broke. Just start.

You don’t need all the things.
You just need to decide you're done staying stuck.
